Provide Adequate Amounts of Water
Pets can’t sweat like humans to maintain body temperatures, so it’s more difficult for your furry friends to stay cool. To ensure your pets stay hydrated, make sure they have access to cool water and shady places to relax during the hot months. Always look out for signs of dehydration.
Consider a Pool
Getting a little pool, even if it is just a cheap kiddie pool, is a great way to let dogs have fun while ensuring they stay cool and hydrated.
Trim Away Those Locks
You can help your pet stay cool by getting them groomed. Cutting or shaving off some of that fur provides a better circulation to temperature relationship. For the same reason humans are cooler with less hair, pets with less hair have a better chance of not over-heating.
Beware of the Pavement
Because owners tend to wear shoes, they forget that surfaces like cement, asphalt or truck beds are a lot hotter than they appear.
Be Aware of Dangers Around the House
The hotter months can cause antifreeze to leak from vehicles, which become sweet-tasting puddles that are obviously dangerous to pets. Also, some fertilizers and garden products are poisonous. Be mindful of these products during the summer and keep them out of your pet’s reach.
Apply That Sunscreen
There are pet-safe sunscreens that are ideal for pets, especially those with light colored or short-haired coats. These animals in particular tend to burn easily under the hot sun. Apply the sunscreen to your pet’s ears and nose before any outdoor activity.
