No matter how many years you may have left on this planet, your future matters. If you have watched the decades pass by in your life with a feeling of discouragement from never completing the level of education that you thought you would, it is not too late. In fact, one woman is living proof that is never too late and your age does not have to be a permanent obstacle to your academic dreams.
If you need an inspirational story to drive you to do something about your own aspirations that you have been ignoring for way too long, you need to look no further than the story of Guadalupe Palacios. She is 96 years old and lives in Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mexico. Right now, she does not have a high school diploma. But ask her again in a few years on her 100th birthday. She has just gone back to high school and says that she is determined to graduate before her age reaches triple digits.
According to NDTV.com, Palacios experienced poverty as a child and had to help her family on the farm instead of attending high school. She never learned to read and write. But that all changed a few years ago when she took literacy classes. She has already passed through primary school and middle school in the past four years. Now, she is going one step further by attending classes at an actual high school filled with teenagers. When she graduates, she plans to begin a career as a teacher.
Many people never return to school because they are too embarrassed to be seen doing something that should have been done years ago. But life is too short to worry about what others will think. Take a lesson from Palacios and never forget your dreams.
