Hollywood producers are always looking to make a big hit. However, the rare Hollywood producer is not only able to hit it big at the box office but, change the world of film as well. One of those rare producers, Lawrence Bender, has been able to conquer Tinseltown on his own terms.
The story of Mr. Bender’s rise doesn’t start on the red carpet. In fact, the producer had to cut his teeth in the wild west world of b-movies before he could make it big. Mr. Bender’s chance came at a friend’s barbecue when he met another ambitious man looking to make it big on Hollywood – Quentin Tarantino.
Bender and Tarantino were talking about their film career ambitions when Tarantino pitched the idea of a film about a heist gone wrong. Bender, sensing a great idea for a film, asked his new friend to go ahead and write the script. A little over a year later, the two would get the green light to make their movie. The result was the art-house hit “Reservoir Dogs.”
With some heat on them, Bender and Tarantino knew they had one chance to swing for the fences. So they decided to pull together one of the most ambitious crime films ever. The result was the seminal gangster film “Pulp Fiction.” Made for just $8 million dollars, “Pulp Fiction” generated over $100 million dollars in the domestic box office alone. Bender would receive an additional surprise months later when he was nominated for “Best Picture” as one of the film’s producers.
“Pulp Fiction” featured a diverse cast of A-list actors like Bruce Willis and Uma Thurman as well as forgotten Hollywood legends like John Travolta. Lawrence Bender’s ability to pull together such a unique film, with such little money, proved that he is one of the most effective producers in the game.
Born in the Bronx, New York, Lawrence Bender has produced over 50 film projects in his career. Among the award-winning films produced by Bender include “Pulp Fiction,” “Good Will Hunting,” and “Inglorious Basterds.” As he enters his next decade in film, Lawrence Bender is looking to shock and delight film fans around the globe.
