Rachel Dolezal to Matt Lauer: “I Identify as Black”

Former NAACP Leader Rachel Dolezal has been making headlines for the past week, causing quite a stir across the nation over race. She was the feature interview on the Today show this morning, telling Matt Lauer “I identify as black”.

According to NJBIZ, Ms. Dolezal resigned from her position as president of the Spokane, Washington chapter of the NAACP on Monday, as a response to the uproar caused by her Caucasian parents’ interview last week. Here is a recap of the events of the past week:

  • June 12th: Lawrence and Ruthanne Dolezal speaks out about their birth daughter’s ethnicity. A media firestorm ensues.
  • June 13th: In an interview with ABC affiliate KXLY in Spokane, Dolezal identifies an African American man as her father.
  • In the same interview above, she is asked if she is black and she states she does not “understand the question”. The reporter then asks if she is white and she abrubtly ends the interview.
  • June 15th: The NAACP gets notice of her resignation.
