Mike Baur is the co-founder and CEO of Swiss Startup Factory, which was launched in 2014. Born in Fribourg, Switzerland, he’s worked in the banking industry for over 20 years, having received an MBA degree from the University of Rochester New York and an Executive MBA from the University of Berne in his home country of Switzerland.
He began his entrepreneurial endeavors at a very early age when he took his first summer job at the age of 14 selling ice cream, which he described as being a difficult learning experience. And according to the Wall Street Journal, which featured a story about him in 2016, he started a career in banking by the time he was 16.
Baur credits his practice of getting up early every morning as being part of what makes him more productive as a businessman. He says that he thinks one of the most important things about being an entrepreneur is being passionate about what you do. This is why he invests a lot of time mentoring and motivating youth through his Swiss Startup program.
According to him, he came up with the idea of starting the Swiss Startup Factory based on his own early experiences with being an investor. He wanted to help improve the quality of business startups by providing coaching and mentoring to new hopeful entrepreneurs who could benefit from his professional guidance.
In the 1990s, he began working at the Union Bank of Switzerland, where he held his position as a board member until 2008. He later created a company called Think Reloaded, which was geared toward giving financial advice to wealthy clients. He says that he is most excited by tools that will provide opportunities for deep learning, and he feels that virtual and augmented reality devices will impact industries in a positive way.
When asked which book he would recommend to aspiring entrepreneurs, he chose the book entitled Awaken the Giant Within by author Anthony Robbins,, who is a popular motivational speaker and life coach. Baur says that he thinks the book gives great basic guidance and several tools to help people reach their personal life goals.
The married father of 2 children remains active in his Zurich, Switzerland based Swiss Startup Factory accelerated program, where he, along with his business partners continue to help new entrepreneurs get their business startup ideas to the market within a 3 month time span.
