Determined, persistent and disciplined, just to name a few, these are the virtues that can be used to describe Thor Halvorssen. Thor Halvorssen has seen a lot of things in his 40 years on this earth. He has been jailed, threatened and exiled to a foreign country. Originally from Venezuela, Thor Halvorssen currently lives in the United States after fleeing his native Venezuela. He fled to avoid persecution after unveiling corruption deals within officials of the Venezuelan government. In the United States, he has also unveiled corruption deals between dictators and musicians such as Jennifer Lopez, Nelly Furtado, and 50 Cent. He has spoken for political prisoners in several countries such as Vietnam, Cuba, Venezuela and Bolivia.
Thor Halvorssen is also considered as a movie director. With other directors like Bryan Singer, he has participated in the production of a movie called the Moon is a Harsh Mistress. With regards to the film production, Thor Halvorssen is credited with the establishment of an institution called Moving Picture Institute. In matters of human right activism, he established the Human Right Foundation in 2005 to fight for human rights better. He has also founded other institutions like the Oslo Freedom Forum. The New York Times constantly heaps him with praises for his efforts with activism. Some of his opinions have featured on several media platforms such as the National Journal, The New York Times, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, Al-Jazeera, BBC News and the Fox News. He was even invited to address the British Parliament several years ago. He has emulated his parents in fighting for the oppressed. His mother died while protesting for human rights while his father was at one time jailed and tortured for opposing the government of Venezuela.
His activism may also have been driven by his passion for history and political science. He holds a degree in history and political science. He is also a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania where he specialized with Phi Beta Kappa and magna cum laude. Some of the issues that he fights for include human trafficking, slavery, and threats to democracy. Some of his friends include Garry Kasparov and Vaclav Havel.
