If you want to get better at anything in life, you need to be prepared for the mental and physical work that it will take to reach your goals. You’ll also need to brace yourself for resistance, which is a part of self-improvement that you may not have heard a lot about.
When you begin your journey to self-improvement, you’ll likely be very excited and motivated. Then, you’ll come to a place where moving forward is tedious and you’re almost tempted to quit. This is resistance. It’s necessary to build character, and when you overcome it, you’ll feel especially fulfilled when you reach your goals.
Resistance can also come in the form of insecurities. You may hear your inner voice telling you that you’re not equipped to pursue the career of your dreams, overcome the relationship challenges that are keeping you from maintaining peace of mind, or conquering the health issues that stop you from living your best life.
You may also find that you start rationalizing why it’s OK that you’re not doing your best in a certain area of life. You’ve got the kids to take care of, a demanding job and you’re tired all the time. And even when you are trying to accomplish things, it may seem like it’s taking forever for you to see results. These are also forms of resistance.
Steven Pressfield refers to this as a form of self-sabotage and calls it the world’s most toxic force. When you ignore resistance and keep pressing toward your goals, you’ll develop consistency and strength of character. And the next time you face a challenge in life, you’ll be more equipped to take on new pursuits with tenacity and the willingness to work through resistance.
